Premier Social Adult Day Services helps seniors achieve a high level of physical, mental, psychological and social wellbeing through stimulating physical, cultural and social activities. These activities are intended to enhance the participant’s feeling that they are part of a larger dependable and stable community to improve their physical and mental health. Isolation is a common issue among older adults today, whether or not they live alone. A research study by the Rush Alzheimer’s Disease Center in Chicago states that lonely individuals may be twice as likely to develop the type of dementia linked to Alzheimer’s disease late in life than those who are not lonely. Thus, socialization is a critical need for senior citizens. However, even though this need has been sufficiently documented and recognized, adequate measures are not always taken to remedy it. Both individuals in assisted living and those in independent living situations face their own set of challenges with socialization.
The benefits of being socially active are endless. Being around other people, especially doing something fun or rewarding, helps to keep a positive outlook on life and improves the mental state. Furthermore, socialization promotes an active lifestyle and better nutritional intake. Seniors who are socially isolated are more likely to skip meals, whereas socially active seniors are more likely to share meals with friends and family. Having somewhere to go, something meaningful to do and people to see makes it easier to get out of bed and excited to face the day.
Any kind of positive interaction with family, friends or neighbors is good for a healthy lifestyle. When we cultivate strong relationships with others, we gain a sense of fulfillment and spending quality time with those we love reminds us that life is worthwhile.
