Premier Social Adult Day Services – Healthy Living

Just the thought of getting older can inspire fright in people. The sheer loss of one’s mobility, possible independence, and one’s mental faculties is enough to make one dread getting older. However, fret not – Premier Social Adult Day Services is here to help.

Here you will find a variety of activities geared toward enhancing the seniors’ ability to cope with advancing age. One example is dance classes. This helps to improve the coordination, posture and vitality of the seniors, not to mention the socialization that this activity provides, which reduces isolation-toxic to any person.

Swimming is another recreational activity that is included at this facility, which fosters greater health and doesn’t require great strength, since it is low impact.

Other ways of low impact exercise are making them carry some of their groceries if they can, thereby providing them with some strengthening of their muscles which may have atrophied. This also gives them the confidence that they can fend for themselves and be, somewhat, self-sufficient.

Heading to the bowling alley is another fun exercise, which introduces the concept of competition and it can bring out the best physical performance from people.

Premier Social also provides for trips that entertain the mind, as well as the body by offering visits to malls that give discounts for seniors. If someone is short of capital, just going window shopping can be a great exercise for the psyche by taking their mind off of their situation and perhaps allowing them to reminisce of a time gone by of their youth.

Riding a bike in a slow but impactful way, “is a great cardiovascular workout, and it also helps to improve balance and focus the work on your leg muscles.” says, Dr. Forrest Hong Ph.D., a certified advanced social care worker and manager of a geriatric care management company in California.

Attending sport activities is a great pastime, as many seniors have never lost their sense of wonder and reverence for athletes and the talents they display. This can also have them hearken back to their youth when ballplayers were paid a pittance to play and they first became fans of American sports.

Seniors that have a green thumb can find great solace in raising fruits and vegetables in a garden, seeing their efforts pay off by ending up on the dinner table.

Until now we have been focusing mostly on making sure the muscles of the body don’t atrophy. However, there are things that can be done to make sure their brains stay active as well. One thing that has been used to great success is the introduction of computers into the lives of seniors. Although some are wary of technology and maybe ‘computer phobic’, with some prodding they can be coaxed to trying a few basic maneuvers. Learning to use email can enhance their lives by allowing them to keep in touch with their loved ones. I have personally witnessed the absolute glee of a senior – a non techie- overcome their fear and conquers the programs word and excel. This gave this individual tremendous confidence that he could overcome all his emotional and or physical ailments.

Audio books are a great tool to utilize if some seniors have trouble with their vision. It can keep them up to date with the latest news and fads and can make them feel as if they are as much a part of society as anyone else.

Lastly, proper nutrition is a key to lengthening and enhancing the lives of seniors. Being mindful of what is healthy and beneficial for their wellbeing and abstaining from harmful toxins and food fillers can really add years to their lives.

A full complement of these services and enhancements are well provided for at Premier Social Adult Day Services. They have locations all over Long Island.
